First of all, what is Sunnah?
You might be wondering what is Sunnah in Islam. To put it into simpler terms, the word ‘Sunnah’ means the blessed practices, actions, and sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).
It is a comprehensive guide on his blessed life, providing a model for all Muslims to follow. The Sunnah serves as a practical application of the Quran, illuminating the souls of believers by guiding them on the righteous path towards a virtuous and purposeful life.
At our Awakening Ihsan Spiritual Retreat, you’ll have the chance to delve deeply into these practices and integrate them into your daily life.
So, the question is… why follow the Sunnah? What significance does it hold in our lives? What is the importance of following the Sunnah? Let’s look at some of the benefits of following the ways of our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Benefits of following the Sunnah
It acts as a guide.
Imagine buying furniture from IKEA, and you decide to assemble the parts of the furniture by yourself. It comes with a guide on how to make that happen.
Although it is not an accurate analogy, it is safe to say that the Sunnah is a guide for us to follow to become the best version of ourselves as human beings.
It is mentioned in the Quran that Prophet Muhammad is a mercy sent to all mankind.
وَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَـٰكَ إِلَّا رَحْمَةًۭ لِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
“It was only as a mercy that We sent you [Prophet] to all people.” [Qur’an 21:107]
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is clearly our ultimate role model for us all to lead a purposeful and meaningful life, hence we should always strive to emulate his way of life, as a spiritual compass, to navigate our spirituality.
Our Sirah retreat will guide you on this journey, providing a space for reflection, learning, and practicing these blessed Sunnah in a supportive community.
It is the key to eternal happiness.
According to Utrujj, In Imam Ghazali’s book, Kitaab Al-Arba’in Fi Usul ad-Din (The Forty Principles of the Religion), which is a summary of his monumental work Ihya Ulum ad-Din, he delves into the concept of Following the Sunnah.
The key to happiness lies in following the Sunnah:
Itiba as-sunnah as-mifahu as-sa’ada
There is much to be said about this topic, and indeed there is a 5th-century book titled the Key to Happiness (Miftahu as-Sa’ada).
It is a beautiful concept and a great motto: the key to happiness is to follow the Prophet (ﷺ). Allah Almighty said:
Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “If you ˹sincerely˺ love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you and forgive your sins. For Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” [Qur’an 3:31]
