Day 01

Topic: Muslim Women Sages

Save 20% on all 4 days Bookings

Many sceptics believe that Islam has allotted Muslim women to the silent roles of being a homemaker.  However, throughout the centuries, numerous Muslim women sages, in different parts of the Muslim world, have participated and excelled in the spiritual teachings of Islam and become exemplars of the community.  They served and supported their communities, and at times, surpassed renowned leaders or scholars in Islamic knowledge, doctrines and practices.

However, the recognition of their contributions and the public awareness of their prominent roles is rather obscured, deserving greater attention and study.  In unearthing texts and contexts of the Muslim women sages, this presentation aims to illuminate minds beyond long-held myths and negative stereotype perceptions, taking valuable lessons from the status of exemplary women in Islam in society and their achievements in the field of Islamic Spirituality.

Day 02

Topic: The Beauty of our Master, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Save 20% on all 4 days Bookings

Allah says in the Holy Qur’an “And indeed you (Muhammad) possess an exemplary character” (Qur’an 68:4).  This 2-day workshop is an intensive study of the most detailed and exquisite qualities of Prophet Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah.  Based upon selections from the al-Shamail al-Muhammadiya compiled by al-Imam al-Tirmidhi in the 9th century, the workshop covers from the beauty of the Prophet’s outer appearance to the more subtle beauty of his noble character, conduct and manners. Knowing his beautiful appearance, lifestyle and character provides the ultimate context for developing a deep, holistic appreciation of the Divine Message and the Messenger.

A proper understanding of Islam in general and the Prophet’s biography and life or Sirah in specific requires a study of the al-Shamail, an authenticated narration and study beyond the lenses of our own socially conditioned speculations and presuppositions.  Knowing the Shamail will allow us to imitate the Prophetic conduct, help us recognise the manifestation of his characteristics and impact upon others, and the text and discussions in this workshop aims to leave an indelible spiritual impact in our lives.

Day 03

Topic: The Pursuit of Happiness: Spiritual Navigations in the Social Media

Save 20% on all 4 days Bookings

With the advent of Internet, the world is now faced with a plethora of devices, software and social media engagement platforms like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Twitter, Snapchat, and many others.  Today, social media has become a pillar of many people’s lives – the Digital 2022 April Global Statshot Report found that there are 4.65 billion social media users on the planet, and that is about 60% of the global population, many of whom are using social media as a primary source of information.  On the one hand, it has allowed people to communicate and interact with the world in an unprecedented way, while on the other, it has flattened or adversely affected personal relationships and stereotyped our ways of living and has become a major source of attention and distraction at the same time.  Whilst it is a tool that can be harnessed for good, our engagement with it can have a serious impact on our spirituality and mental wellbeing.

There are indeed hundreds of studies on the effect of social media and personal wellbeing, this discussion will focus on timeless principles and guidance of the Islamic tradition and provide faith-based understanding of the effect social media can have in our lives, with a practical counsel on avoiding its pitfalls.  The discussion will address esteemed values, etiquette, and principles that we should uphold and practise in navigating current and future social media platforms.  The speaker will also provide advice on managing and maintaining one’s spirituality, mental wellbeing and happiness in the course of our work and daily life in the midst of the highly charged world of social media.

Day 04

Topic: Managing Anger and Mastering Emotions

Save 20% on all 4 days Bookings

Many Islamic scholars consider anger as among the most ruinous trait that a human being can possess, and the Prophet Muhammad regularly remind his followers “do not be angry”.  Anger is an intense emotional state that is among the natural dispositions of every human being.  While it is not a trait to be rid of completely, the emotions should be managed and mastered.  Manifesting anger without due consideration can lead to disastrous effects, a slippery slope that may result in varied negative consequences.  The speaker will examine the subject of anger based upon discussions by great scholars like Imam Abu Zayd al-Balkhi (d. 934) and Imam al-Ghazali (d. 1111), and will discuss its definition, causes, triggers, biology, and recommend spiritual remedies to heal, manage and master the intense emotional condition.
