Shaykh Dr. Gibril Fouad Haddad, a renowned Islamic scholar, has been residing in Brunei with his family for over a decade, although he was born in Beirut, Lebanon. His expertise spans across various areas of Islamic studies, making him a leading authority in Tafsir studies (Mufassir) and Hadith Studies (Muhadith). He is particularly interested in Applied Comparative Tafsir, Islamic Intellectual History, Islamic Biobibliography, Islamic Sunni Jurisprudence, History of Islamic Sunni Jurisprudence, Islamic Sunni Doctrine, Islamic Heresiography, Isnad, and Hadith Transmission.
Dr. Haddad is not only a prolific author but also a skilled translator of classical Islamic texts, with over 30 works translated and published under his name. His journey in Islamic education began after converting to Islam, leading him to travel extensively to study under renowned scholars worldwide. He holds ijazas from more than 150 scholars, demonstrating his dedication to acquiring knowledge in Islamic sciences.
Recognized for his contributions, Dr. Haddad was listed in The 500 Most Influential Muslims in the World in 2009 as “one of the clearest voices of traditional Islam in the West.” Currently serving as the chief editor of the Integrated Encyclopaedia of the Qurʾān (IEQ), he was previously a Senior Assistant Professor in Applied Comparative Tafsir at the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Centre for Islamic Studies (University of Brunei Darussalam).
His educational background includes a Doctorate from Kolej Universiti Insaniah, Kedah Darul Aman, Malaysia, and a Ph.D. from Columbia University, New York. Dr. Haddad has studied under esteemed scholars in Damascus, Mecca, Morocco, and Beirut, receiving invaluable teachings and certifications from notable figures in Islamic scholarship.
In addition to his academic pursuits, Dr. Haddad has authored over three dozen books and numerous articles on various topics within Islamic studies. His current involvement in the Integrated Encyclopaedia of Quran project reflects his commitment to advancing scholarship in the field. Furthermore, he actively engages in teaching communities worldwide, both in-person and through online platforms, ensuring the dissemination of classical Islamic knowledge to a global audience.
