Mohamed Nassir Abdul Sukkur is the Head of the Studies in Inter-Religious Relations in Plural Societies (SRP) Programme at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. With a career spanning technology, education, and interfaith relations, Mohamed Nassir has built a remarkable legacy as an educator, thought leader, and advocate for understanding and social harmony.
He graduated with a Master of Arts in Religion in Global Politics from the prestigious School of Oriental & African Studies (SOAS), University of London, in 2017. At SOAS, he explored the intersections of religion and politics, early Islamic development, modern trends in Islam, and Southeast Asian history. He also holds a First-Class Honours Degree in Information Systems (B.Sc.) from Staffordshire University, UK. Currently, he is pursuing a doctorate in Islamic Philosophy.
Before his educational leadership roles, Mohamed Nassir worked in the software industry before transitioning to Islamic education and community work. He held key positions at the Muslim Converts Association of Singapore (Darul Arqam) and Abdul Aleem Siddique Mosque, where he was instrumental in strengthening community initiatives.
Driven by a profound commitment to promoting moderate and credible Islamic knowledge, Mohamed Nassir founded SimplyIslam in 2006 with the support of close friends. Serving as CEO until 2023, he guided the organisation to become a cornerstone of English-medium Islamic education in Singapore, operating multiple centres across the island and catering to thousands of students through diverse programmes for adults and youth. To date, over 22,000 individuals have attended SimplyIslam’s classes and events in Singapore, reflecting its widespread impact. Under his visionary leadership, SimplyIslam extended its reach internationally, establishing educational and human resource assets in Malaysia, India, and the United Kingdom, while navigating the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic. Since 2023, he has continued to contribute to SimplyIslam’s mission as its Non-Executive Chairman.
Mohamed Nassir’s contributions have earned him international and local recognition. He was listed in “The 500 Most Influential Muslims” (2009 & 2010) by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre (Jordan). In December 2010, he was highlighted in a Berita Harian article, “Kenali 50 Wajah,” as one of four key figures shaping the Singapore Malay-Muslim community’s future.
His passion for moderation, peace and education has led to active participation in global forums. In January 2009, Mohamed Nassir represented Singapore at the Muslim Leaders of Tomorrow (MLT) global conference in Qatar. He was a discussion leader on the subject “Faith, Youth, and Social Media” at the World Economic Forum (2011) in Jakarta, and was a discussion participant at the Muslim Minority Leaders Colloquium (2013) in Paris. Mohamed Nassir (and SimplyIslam) are frequently featured in documentaries and the local media, discussing critical issues such as terrorism, extremism, education, and community resilience. He has been interviewed in documentaries “Misguided” (a 4-part documentary about terrorism, aired in January 2010) [view excerpt] and “One Voice” [view excerpt], both produced by Mediacorp Singapore.
Mohamed Nassir spearheaded SimplyIslam’s involvement in humanitarian initiatives, including the nationwide Aid to Syrian Refugees in Turkey (ASRIT). Since 2017, he has collaborated with international partners to improve the lives of the people of Gaza through sustainable projects, such as constructing water wells and providing nearly daily supplies of food, water, medicine, sanitary items, and other essential necessities.
With a vision for fostering interfaith understanding and community well-being, Mohamed Nassir continues to shape the discourse on religion, education, and societal harmony in Singapore and beyond.
