For truly, it is not that one sacred season of devotion ends, except that another opportunity for attaining God\u2019s forgiveness, bounty, and self-purification begins. In these cycles of sacred times, we find the heavenly gift of a renewed chance to replenish our souls and seek God\u2019s reward and proximity.<\/p>\n<p>Among the reports transmitted regarding the sanctity of the first ten days of Dhul \u1e24ijja, the following has been related on the authority of Ibn \u02bfAbb\u0101s RA that the Prophet SAW said: <strong>\u201cThere are no days in which [good] actions are superior than in these days.\u201d <\/strong>It was asked, \u201cNot even fighting for the sake of God?\u201d He replied, \u201cNot even fighting for the sake of God, except that a person sets out with his life and his wealth and returns with neither.&#8221;<em> [Musnad al-Imam A\u1e25mad: vol.1\/p.346.]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On the authority of Ab\u016b Hurayra RA, the Messenger of God SAW said: \u201cThere are no days more beloved to God that He be worshipped in them than the ten days of Dhul \u1e24ijja. <strong>Each day of fasting in it is equivalent to the fast of an entire year. And each night standing in prayer is equivalent to standing in prayer on the Night of Power (Laylat al-Qadr). <\/strong>\u201d <em>[Sunan al-Tirmidhi : vol.iii\/Kit\u0101b al-\u1e63awm 6, b\u0101b 52 :hadith 758]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Also due to the stature and merits of these days, God swore by them when He said: \u201cBy the Dawn. And by the ten nights [al-Fajr: 1-2],\u201d and in them, He bestowed many of His bounties on His Prophets. Ibn \u02bfAbb\u0101s RA relates that in the ten days of Dhul \u1e24ijja, God accepted the repentance of Prophet Adam AS , and in it Prophet Ibr\u0101h\u012bm AS became the intimate friend (khal\u012bl) of God \u201c\u2026God\u00a0took Ibrah\u012bm as His intimate friend [al-Nis\u0101\u02be: 125].\u201d Hence, he submitted his wealth to the two noble guests (i.e. the angels sent to the people of L\u016b\u1e6d [H\u016bd: 69-79]), his soul to the flames, his son to sacrifice, and his heart to the Most-Merciful One (al-Ra\u1e25m\u0101n).<\/p>\n<p>In it the Prophet M\u016bs\u0101 AS was also honored with the following call, \u201c[God] said: \u2018O M\u016bs\u0101, I have chosen you over the people with My messages and My words [to you]. So take what I have given you and be among the grateful\u2019 [al-A\u02bfr\u0101f: 144],&#8221; and Prophet D\u0101w\u016bd was granted forgiveness, \u201cSo We forgave him that; and indeed, for him is nearness to Us and a good place of return [\u1e62\u0101d: 25].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is said that the chief of all the months is Rama\u1e0d\u0101n and the most sanctified of the sacred months (ashhur al-\u1e25urum) is Dhul \u1e24ijja and the most beloved days of this month to God is the first ten. Good works in them are multiplied. <strong>It is also said that whoever honors these ten days, God honors him with ten bounties:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>[checklist]&nbsp;<\/p>\n<li>blessing in his life,<\/li>\n<li>increase in his wealth,<\/li>\n<li>protection of his family,<\/li>\n<li>atonement for his sins,<\/li>\n<li>multiplication of his good deeds,<\/li>\n<li>ease in his last days of life,<\/li>\n<li>light for his darkness,<\/li>\n<li>weight on his scale,<\/li>\n<li>salvation from descending [intoHellfire],<\/li>\n<li>and ascension into [Heaven].[\/checklist]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[quote]It is reported that al-Awza\u02bf\u012b RA said: \u201cIt has reached me that good works in the ten days have the worth of fighting for the sake of God.[Nobody] fasts its day and worships during its night, except that God records for him[the reward of] martyrdom for the sake of God.\u201d[\/quote]<\/p>\n<p>For this reason, it is encouraged for one to strive to worship and perform good deeds during these days; including acts such as fasting, prayer, remembrance (dhikr ), visiting the sick,\u0001\u0002\u00a0showing kindness to orphans, attending gatherings of knowledge, and turning one\u2019s focus towards God.<\/p>\n<p>[pullquote_left]\u201cThere are no days in which [good] actions are superior than in these days.\u201d It was asked, \u201cNot even fighting for the sake of God?\u201d He replied,\u201cNot even fighting forthe sake of God,except that a person sets out with his life and his wealth and returns with neither.\u201d[\/pullquote_left]<\/p>\n<p>It is also reported that \u02bfUmar b. al-Kha\u1e6d\u1e6d\u0101b and Ibn \u02bfAbb\u0101s RA used to go out to the marketplace and exalt God through saying takb\u012br and that the people used to join them in their exaltation of God. Among the distinct days of these ten, is the eighth of Dhul \u1e24ijja known as the Dayof \u201cWatering\u201d (yawm al-tarwiya) because on this day the pilgrims in Mecca are given drink and they fill their vessels in preparation for the Day of \u02bfArafa.<\/p>\n<h3>The Day of &#8216;Arafa<\/h3>\n<p>However, <strong>the most distinguished and significant day of these ten days of Dhul \u1e24ijja is the Day of\u02bfArafa which is considered amongst the most important days of the year.<\/strong> There are various reports asto how this day acquired its name. One report is that on this day, God presents (yu\u02bfarrifu) His worshipful servants to His angels and exalts them. Another report is that this was the day that Adam AS became reunited (ta\u02bfarrafa) withhis wife \u1e24awwa.<\/p>\n<p>The Day of \u02bfArafa is a day of immense significance to the Muslim community. In it, Muslims are reminded of the many blessings bestowed upon them by God, including their brotherhood and their dissimilarity to divided peoples who possess neither bonds of unity nor a common belief system that brings their hearts together. They are also reminded of the completion of the Qur\u2019an and the fulfillment ofGod\u2019s blessings upon them, as <strong>it was on the Day of \u02bfArafa that the verse, \u201cThis day, I have completed your religion, and have fulfilled myfavor upon you and have chosen Islam as your religion, [al-M\u0101\u02beida: 3]\u201d was revealed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In regards to the merits of this day, the Messenger of God SAW said: \u201cThere is no day more venerable to God than the Day of \u02bfArafa. God descends to the Heavens of the earth and exalts the people of the earth to the inhabitants of the Heavens. He says: \u2018Look at my servants [as they are] dishevelled, dustied, and fatigued. They have come from every far off corner of the earth. They have not witnessed my mercy and they have not witnessed my punishment. And I do not see a day in which more people are saved from the Hellfire than the Day of \u02bfArafa.\u2019\u201d <em>[Majma\u02bf al-zaw\u0101\u02beid: vol.iii\/p.253.]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And in another transmission it is worded, \u201cYou have come to me disshelved, dustied, and fatigued from every far off corner of the earth. Bear witness that I have forgiven you [all].\u201d<em>[Shu\u02bfab al-Im\u0101n li-l-Bayhaq\u012b : vol.iii, B\u0101b 25\/4068.]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>[box_light]It is reported on the authority of Ibn \u02bfUmar RA saying: \u201cThe Messenger of God SAW said: \u2018When the evening of \u02bfArafa arrives, nobody with a mustard seed\u2019s weight of faith (im\u0101n) in their hearts is left, except that they are forgiven.\u00a0It was said: \u2018O Messenger of God, is this restricted only to the people on \u02bfArafa?\u2019 He said: \u2018No, it is for all of the Muslims.\u2019\u201d<em>[Majma\u02bf al-zaw\u0101\u02beid: vol.iii\/p.252.]<\/em>[\/box_light]<em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile on this day, in the midst of all of these spiritual openings and the cascade of divine mercy, the devil is in the ultimate state of humiliation and disgrace. It is reported on the authority of \u1e6cal\u1e25a b.\u02bfUbayd All\u0101h b. Kar\u012bz RA that the Messenger of God SAW said: \u201cThe Devil has not been seen more abased, repelled, humiliated, and furious than on the Day of \u02bfArafa. This is due to what he has seen from the descent of [divine] mercy and God\u2019s forgiveness of grave sins. With the exception to what he was shown on the Day of Badr.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was said: \u201cAnd what did he see on the Day of Badr, O Messenger of God?\u201d He said: \u201cHe saw Jibr\u012bl preparing the angels [for war].\u201d <em>[Al-Muwa\u1e6d\u1e6da\u02be: p.291\/Kit\u0101b al-\u1e25ajj-j\u0101mi\u02bf al-\u1e25ajj.]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>From <strong>among the commendable acts on this day is fasting (for the non-pilgrim), and being abundant in supplication, remembrance (adhk\u0101r) , particularly in repeating L\u0101il\u0101ha illa All\u0101h with sincerity and contemplation. <\/strong>The Prophet SAW encouraged us to fast and engage in remembrance by citing their merits and significance. It is related on the authority of Ab\u012b Qat\u0101da RA that the Messenger of God SAW said: \u201cThe fast on the Day of \u02bfArafa is counted by God as a [source of] expiation [for sins] that came the year before and the year after\u00a0it.\u201d\u00a0<em>[\u1e62a\u1e25\u012b\u1e25 Muslim: vol.ii\/Kit\u0101b al-\u1e63iy\u0101m 13-b\u0101b 36\/h.196.]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[pullquote_right]\u0001\u0002\u201cThe fast on the Dayof \u02bfArafa is counted by God as a [source of] expiation [for sins] that came the year before and the year after it.\u201d\u0003\u0004[\/pullquote_right]<\/p>\n<h4>And on the authority of \u02bfA\u02beisha RA the Prophet SAW used to consider fasting the Day of \u02bfArafa as fasting one thousand days.<em> [Majma\u02bf al-zaw\u0101\u02beid: vol.iii\/p.189]<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>It has also been reported on the authority of \u02bfAl\u012b b. Ab\u012b \u1e6c\u0101lib krwj saying: \u201cThe Messenger of God SAW said: \u2018The most abundant supplication of mine and supplication of the Prophets who came before me on \u02bfArafa was: <em><strong>L\u0101il\u0101ha illa All\u0101hu wa\u1e25dahu l\u0101 shar\u012bka lahu, lahu-l mulk wa lahu-l \u1e25amd, wa huwa \u02bfal\u0101kulli shay\u02bein qad\u012br<\/strong><\/em> (there is no god but God, the One Who has no partners, to Him is the dominion and to Him is [our] gratitude, and he is All-Powerful over all things). \u2019\u201d<em>[Al-Sunan al-kubr\u0101 li-l Bayhaq\u012b :vol.v\/p.117.]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>[box_light]Also it has been transmitted on his SAW authority saying, \u201cThe best supplication is the supplication of the Day of \u02bfArafa. And the best of what I have said and what the Prophets before me have said is: l\u0101il\u0101ha illa All\u0101hu wa\u1e25dahu l\u0101 shar\u012bka lahu.\u201d<em>[Al-Muwa\u1e6d\u1e6da\u02be : p.291\/Kit\u0101b al-\u1e25ajj-j\u0101mi\u02bf al-\u1e25ajj.]<\/em>[\/box_light]<em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>This pertains both to the pilgrim and the non-pilgrim. As for the hadiths regarding the merits of fasting on the Day of \u02bfArafa, they are intended for the non-pilgrim since the person performing the \u1e24ajj is forbidden to fast. This is to ensure that he preserves his energy to perform the rites of pilgrimage in the best fashion as well as to worship and supplicate rigorously on this rare opportunity.
