The traditional Bread &amp; Butter Pudding is an inexpensive excuse of creating an indulgent treat in less time than it takes to get dressed to head to the nearby cafe. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The recipe dates back to the Elizabethan era and was, in its previous life, called the Devonshire White Pot. It&#8217;s quite interesting to note that back then, recipes were written in paragraphs, with the ingredients and method included in the text &#8211; as shown in Hannah Woolley&#8217;s (1622 &#8211; 1675) <a title=\"Hannah Woolley - Whitepot Recipe\" href=\"http:\/\/www.elizabethan-era.org.uk\/devonshire-white-pot-recipe.htm\" target=\"_blank\">book<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/muzlimbuzz.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Hannah-Woolley-recipe-book.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1504\" src=\"http:\/\/muzlimbuzz.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Hannah-Woolley-recipe-book.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"229\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8220;Take two quarts of new Milk, a peny white Loaf sliced very thin, <\/span><\/em><\/strong><strong><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">then make the Milk scalding hot, then put to it the Bread, <\/span><\/em><\/strong><strong><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">and break it, and strain it through a Cullender, <\/span><\/em><\/strong><strong><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">then put in four Eggs, a little Spice, Sugar, Raisins, and Currants, <\/span><\/em><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><em>and a little Salt, and so bake it, but not too much, for then it will whey.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I could never imagine how tough it would be, to decipher recipes if we had carried on in the same stanza-writing method. We&#8217;d probably be eating out more often, <em>that&#8217;s for sure.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">According to <a title=\"John Nott - Whitepot recipe\" href=\"http:\/\/historicalfoods.com\/whitepot-bread-butter-pudding-recipe\" target=\"_blank\">John Nott&#8217;s recipe <\/a>in 1723, on the other hand, White Pot also called for bone-marrow in place of butter, or even to complement the butter in the recipe. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Either way, there&#8217;s something so comforting yet divine about Bread &amp; Butter Puddings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Well no, I will be using neither butter nor bone marrow for this recipe. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I&#8217;m opting for a crowd-pleaser:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/picasaweb.google.com\/lh\/photo\/xCsfaJLB4xKIijRK3iDdAYDsdBX4-rbrvrGKsbMCX7s?feat=embedwebsite\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/-CfL8EI53QBY\/TgoN6SmVpUI\/AAAAAAAAASU\/nU7ej7atObM\/s640\/Nutella.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"539\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Can never go wrong with Nutella &#8211; spread it on bread slices or on plain crackers or even in cup\/cakes or even on its own (mm <em>guilty pleasures<\/em>!). Seriously, I don&#8217;t know anyone who <em>doesn&#8217;t<\/em> love Nutella. Mother of all bread spreads, this cocoa &amp; hazelnut spread is definitely a <strong>winner<\/strong> for everyone in my family. <em>Explains why it needs replenishing so often<\/em>!<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Here&#8217;s a little (unrelated) baking tip: to make good chocolate chip cookies, do include ground or chopped hazelnuts, because it gives a heavenly Nutella aftertaste. Try it!<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>What do we need for a decadent bowl of Bread &amp; Nutella Pudding?<\/h2>\n<p>[checklist]<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><em>5 slices Leftover White bread<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><em>5 generous tbsp Nutella spread<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><em>250ml Fresh milk<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><em>50ml Evaporated milk<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><em>1\/2 tsp Vanilla Essence<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><em>2 tsp Hot Chocolate powder<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><em>2 tbsp Brown Sugar*<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><em>2 beaten Fresh Eggs<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><em>Butter for greasing<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/checklist]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">* you may substitute Brown Sugar with 1 1\/2 tbsp White Sugar<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">1) Cut the crusts off of the white bread and spread 1 tbsp of Nutella on each slice. See what I mean by <em>generous<\/em>. Cut the bread into quarters. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">2) In a bowl, whisk milk, vanilla, hot chocolate powder and sugar. Add in the beaten eggs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">3) Grease a 7-inch round pyrex bowl or ramekin with butter. Line the bowl with bread, strain and pour in the whisked mixture. Place the bowl in a slightly bigger tray and fill the tray with water. For baking noobs, this method is called double-boiling; great for custards and puddings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">4) Bake at 180<span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">\u00b0<\/span>C for 25 mins and another 15 mins at 150<span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">\u00b0<\/span>C (this time, partially cover the bowl).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Now wait (im)patiently in front of the oven.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/picasaweb.google.com\/lh\/photo\/EjzY9K0FzFR_-7VBs_OZ3IDsdBX4-rbrvrGKsbMCX7s?feat=embedwebsite\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-h4xuhG0jIjY\/TgoKeXyrDNI\/AAAAAAAAASE\/FXCVyY8alMQ\/s640\/BnN%252520Pudding2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"393\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Touch the top of the pudding; crust should be crisp and when you press it down, it should be springy. Springy means it&#8217;s custard-like on the inside (read: <strong><em>perfecto<\/em><\/strong>).
